I am versed in the processes of government at every level, and am confident in getting the work done that’s needed for our District and Island.

  • Spent 10+ years as a Hawai'i County Housing Specialist

  • Starting in 1988, I worked in community boards, Council, State, U.S. Congress, and U.S. Senate

  • Pacific Century Fellow, Class of 2003

  • Trained and worked as a Non-profit Executive Director

  • Volunteered as a Steward, Committee Chair, and Island Board Chair for the Hawai'i Government Employees Association (HGEA)

  • Contract Negotiator for BU13 representing County workers, under HGEA

  • Master’s Degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC

  • Married to Cecily Keakealani (Whittington), 5 children, 4 grandchildren

Things You Didn’t Know About Kaloa

  • I am a 10+ year cancer survivor and received treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

  • I come from a single-mother household and my brother and I were hanai and formally adopted by my grandparents.

  • My spouse and 5 children are all fluent in ʻōlelo Hawai'i and have attended Kula Kaiapuni

  • Formerly a Pre-Med Counselor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence

  • Secured funding for the Rural Residency Program from the Legislature, which is the first neighbor-island Residency program administered by Hilo Medical Center and supported by the Hilo Medical Center Foundation

  • Lived and worked in Washington, DC for 7 years, and worked for every level of government (e.g. Kahaluʻu Neighborhood Board to U.S. Senate) with the exception of the White House

  • While in DC, our Hawaiʻi Delegation staff softball team played softball against Vice President Dan Quayle’s team. The Vice President hit a pop-fly out to left field, I caught it, and unceremoniously got the VP out

  • First person from Hawaiʻi to graduate from George Washington Universityʻs, Graduate School of Political Management with a Master’s Degree
